Most people probably don’t look at it this way but I’ve heard a few people say that they consider lottery tickets to be an investment. When I tell them that most people think of buying lottery tickets as being the exact opposite, a total waste of money. I suppose it all depends on your point of view. If you look at buying lottery tickets as a form of entertainment then I suppose it’s not a total waste of time but looking at it as an investment opportunity I reckon is stretching things a little far, that is of course unless you’re one of the lucky ones who happens to win a prize.

Naturally, to win a prize you have to go out and buy a ticket and then if you do that there is always a chance that once you’ve won that elusive prize you can’t claim it because you’ve gone and lost the ticket. Now that would be a tragedy. It does happen too, I even wrote a post about it called Can You Afford To Lose Your Lottery Ticket?, which gives an idea of how many people actually lose their lottery tickets. It’s one of the many reasons why I buy my lottery tickets online.  Even as recent as the last Oz Lotto $70M the Victorian winner has still failed to front up to collect their winnings. Could it be that they don’t know they’ve won because they’ve lost their ticket?

How Do People Lose Their Lottery Ticket?

This sort of made me think about all the ways that people could lose their tickets if they didn’t buy their lottery ticket online. Let’s consider some of those shall we?

  • You left it in your pocket and it got put through the wash! This would have to be the number one way to lose something although technically it’s not lost, you know where it is you just can’t recognise it from the sorry mess it turned into.
  • The wife, or husband, accidentally threw it away not knowing what it was. I know my wife throws things out when I

leave them lying around because she thinks it’s actually junk.

  • Your ex destroyed it out of pure spite. Don’t laugh, it can happen, I read somewhere how this sheila sold her other half”s Porsche for a couple of bucks because she caught him cheating on her.
  • Lost the wallet or purse with the winning ticket in it. Don’t worry, at least someone can still cash it in.  :evil2:
  • The wife used the back of it to write her shopping list on and then threw it in the rubbish.
  • The Gremlins took it. You know you left it in your wallet or draw but no matter how hard you look you can’t find the

bastard. Not only can’t you find the ticket you’re now very unpopular with the family after accusing them all of losing it.

  • It’s a windy day, you know you’ve won, you have the ticket in your hand and you’re on the way to cash it in when all of a sudden you stumble and drop the ticket. The wind immediately picks it up and playfully keeps it out of your reach and then all of a sudden it’s whisked away and people are looking at you as you’re kneeling down alternating between shrieks of anguish and tears of remorse for not buying the winning lottery ticket online.
  • You’ve mislaid it. You know you bought the ticket! You know you’ve won because you religiously use the same numbers every week! You just don’t remember where you left it! :nono:
  • The dog ate it! Why not? It can eat your kids homework so there’s no reason why it can’t make a feast of your lottery ticket.
  • It got mixed up in some paperwork which you shredded.

If you don’t want to fall into the losing your lottery ticket trap all you need do is to buy your lottery ticket online. You can do this by joining any of the lottery agents on this site such as theLotter.com, Oz Lotteries, PLAYHUGELOTTOS.COM and LottoZone! Join any one of those and you’ll never have to worry about losing your lottery ticket again.

Maybe you have a special way of losing things that you would love to share with us? If so just leave a comment!

The Lottery! You Have To Be In It To Win It

In life there are winners and losers and there is a very distinct factor that separates them. The winners are those who are not happy with their lot in life and are hell bent in doing something about it. The losers are those people who are also nor happy with the hand life has dealt them but rather than do something about it they prefer to sit back and whinge about how their life sucks. Unfortunately for them not only doesn’t it help their situation it also doesn’t help to cement their relationship with their friends.

Instead of sitting back and doing nothing they need to work on ways to improving their situation.

Your Situation & How To Improve It

What I Have

  • A crappy job! Don’t worry, you’re not alone but sitting around complaining isn’t going to help.
  • Not having enough money is a common complaint but there are steps you can take to help your situation.
  • A complaining wife isn’t always pleasant and the worst thing you can do is to stand there and argue with her.

How To Change It

  • Look for another job, but don’t quit the one you have until you’ve found it
  • Find ways of saving money. Consolidate your loans. Burn your credit card. Find other ways of earning an income.
  • Find out why she is complaining and resolve it. Perhaps you’re not doing all that you should be doing.

That was only a few things that could be bothering people; I’m sure there are heaps more that could be added to the list but what I am trying to convey here is that no matter what the problem is there’s always a solution or a way of dealing with it. In many life situations there is a cause and effect and the winners are those who go out there and change things to cause an effect otherwise all you have is a never ending situation.

You may well remember my last post Lottery Ticket Humour And How Prayers Only Go So Far where I presented a joke about a bloke who was always complaining about not winning the lottery but failing to realise the most important factor of the cause and effect relationship. He had to buy a lottery ticket! Buying a lottery ticket is the cause part of the equation, the most important part without which you have no hope in hell of ever winning the lottery.

You don’t even have to buy a lottery ticket every week to have that chance at winning. You could just leave it for the major draws or for that special occasion like a birthday or just because you have a couple of spare bucks. Being able to buy your lottery ticket online means that as long as you have an internet connection you never have to worry about missing out on your chance to win the big one. Your main three options for buying an online lottery ticket so far are;

  • Oz Lotteries: For all your Australian online lottery needs including PowerBall
  • theLotter.com: Buy lottery tickets online from any of the world’s major lotteries.
  • PLAYHUGELOTTOS.COM: Also gives you the option of buying your lottery tickets from many of the worlds major draws

Can You Afford To Lose Your Lottery Ticket?

If I’ve said it once I’ve said it a thousand times, the biggest advantage of buying your lottery tickets online is that you never have to worry about not being able to claim your lottery ticket. This is simply because once you buy your ticket from an online lottery agent you will always receive an email letting you know. At least I know this to be true of PLAYHUGELOTTOS.COM and Oz Lotteries. Even though you don’t get notified from theLotter.com you do get an email of your ticket allowing  you to keep track of it and so you don’t need to worry about losing it. In case you may think this doesn’t happen all that often I’ve done a quick search to see if it is a regular occurrence.

How Many Winning Lottery Tickets Actually Go Unclaimed?

  • Clock Ticking On Unclaimed Lottery Ticket: Someone who bought a ticket on August the 6th 2010 and won $1,000,0000pick it right dollars is going to lose the lot because the money goes back into the lotto pool once a year expires.
  • Asheville Winning Lottery Ticket Unclaimed: This one is only for $200,000 and involves getting 5 numbers in Powerball so maybe they don’t think it’s worth claiming? Yeah right   :noway: As far as this lottery is concerned they have 180 days from the drawing to claim their prize.
  • One Winning Lottery Ticket In Columbia Goes Unclaimed: Some South Carolina resident is $30,000 richer and does’t even know it!  The ticket was sold in August at Hickory Point #27 at 2617 Wade Hampton Blvd in Greenvilleand and they have until August 22nd to claim their prize.
  • Millions Go Unclaimed In Western Australian Lotteries: Just this year alone there is $2.4 million that is sitting around waiting for someone to claim it. Are you one of them? Do you still have your ticket? Shit, you didn’t leave it in your shirt and put it through the washing machine did you? No mention of  there being an expiry date with this lot.
  • Millions Of Expiring Lottery Jackpots Expiring: This articles refers to several tickets that are going unclaimed and one poor bloke, or woman, who just missed out on $250,000!

I could go on as there are seven pages of search results. This just goes to show that it’s more than just a rare occurrence. It’s hard enough to win the lottery as it is, can you afford not to buy your lottery ticket online?

What To Do With Your Lottery Winnings

Don’t think that just because you have won the lottery that all your prayers have been answered. Sure you may be rolling in money now but unless you manage your winnings properly you could lose it all. I remember a family who won over a million dollars and a year later they were back on welfare. Yep, they blew the whole lot in a year. That was years ago and these days winning the lottery can make you a multi millionaire but if you’re not careful you can easily blow the whole lot. Don’t believe me, well let’s take a look at some lottery horror stories.

  • Andrew Jackson Whittaker Jr: On December 25, 2002 this bloke won $315 million in USA’s Powerball lottery. He decided to take the cash out which netted him $114 million dollars after taxes. You would think that amount of money would set you up for life wouldn’t you? Nope, Mr. Whittaker lost it all in 4 years.
  • Callie Rogers: This teenager won £1.9million and because she didn’t know what she was doing not only did she lose the lot she got herself into debt. She now regrets ever winning the lottery.

These are only a couple of stories of people who have lost their fortunes and just goes to show that unless you know how to handle money winning the lottery will not solve your financial woes. Here are a few tips on what you should do if you’re ever lucky enough to win the lottery.

  1. Anonymity: If at all possible remain anonymous because once you get your picture in the paper telling everyone how you’ve won millions you$5k all spread out will be subjected to an unspeakable amount of people trying to get a piece of the pie.
  2. Don’t Quit Your Job: This is the first thing that people do but unless your job is absolutely intolerable I would keep it, at least until things settle down and you know exactly what you are going to do. Keeping a sense of normality in your life helps to keep things in perspective.
  3. Do Nothing: Honestly rushing into things is the worst mistake anyone can do in life and that holds true when winning big bucks in the lottery. If it was me I would deposit the money into a high interest account. That way the money is safe and actually growing why you’re deciding how best to manage it.
  4. Invest In A Home: I would definitely use some of it to purchase my own home but I wouldn’t go crazy and buy something that is bigger than what I need. I sure wouldn’t buy a mansion that needs a huge upkeep. Heck, rather than spending millions on a house I wouldn’t appreciate I would buy another home in another part of the world that I love. That way I could rotate between the two never having to put up with the cold again.
  5. Invest At Least Half Of My Winnings: By investing the majority of your winnings you know that even though you go crazy you will have something to fall back on. I wouldn’t put all my eggs in one basket though. I would put some in a high interest account. I would invest some in real estate and the rest I would invest in the stock market making sure I only purchased blue chip shares.

Naturally I would also use some of it to tour the world visiting places I’ve never been to and revisiting some that I have and have vowed to return. One of those would have to be Las Vegas. I only spent two days in Vegas during my last visit and I would love to see a lot more. No, I wouldn’t blow all my cash in the casinos but I would love to see the Bellagio fountains again.
